Wow!! Only 10 more days until Spring!

According to the Farmer's Almanac...

The Vernal Equinox

Ah, spring! This season brings increasing daylight, warming temperatures, and the rebirth of flora and fauna. The word equinox is derived from the Latin words meaning “equal night.” Days and nights are approximately equal everywhere and the Sun rises and sets due east and west.

Have you ever tried to balance a raw egg on it's end on the first day of spring?

Here's a fun spring project from Martha Stewart

Eggshell Flower Pots!

Young gardeners can use eggshells as pots to start seeds and coffee-stirrer tags to foretell what will pop up where.

Plant seeds according to package instructions, and nestle planters in an egg carton on a sunny windowsill, where they can be watered easily.

The first leaves to sprout will be the cotyledons or seed leaves, which supply nutrients to the young plant until the first true leaves (resembling those of the parent plant) appear. When plants have grown to about 3 inches and have at least two sets of true leaves, they are ready to be transplanted to the garden. (Remove them from the eggshells first.) and be sure there's no danger of frost!

I ordered my heirloom tomato seeds and will be planting them in seed trays to sprout! I love waking up each morning to mist the trays with water! Watching the first leaves pop out of the soil is so exciting! I'll post pics here as they grow!

Try making this snack for St Paddy's Day
It's yummy and easy to make! From Spoonful.com

What you'll need

  • Green pepper
  • English muffin
  • Cheddar cheese

How to make it

  1. To make one, slice a green pepper crosswise near the pointed end to get a small, three-lobed shamrock shape. (If your pepper has four lobes, you've got a lucky clover instead.) Cut a small slice for a stem.
  2. Toast half an English muffin, then top it with a slice of Cheddar and the pepper shamrock. Place the muffin on a tray, then broil it in a toaster oven until the cheese is melted.
