April 6th @ Poughkeepsie Galleria

Presented by Mill Street Loft – Dutchess Arts Camp and hosted by the Poughkeepsie Galleria Come Make Music, Art and Friends as We
Celebrate a Day at Arts Camp in Our Community
Saturday - April 6th, 2013
Poughkeepsie Galleria
"A Day at Arts Camp"
1-4pm Center Court
On April 6th, 2013, the center court stage at the Poughkeepsie Galleria will be brimming with award winning musical talent, art making fun, dance, drumming and lots of frolicking. “It is a glimpse into our summer magic”, said Ann Teed, director of the Millbrook Dutchess Arts Camp site. “This year, instead of having four individual open houses for the Dutchess Arts Camp 2013 kick off, we decided to take our fantastical, fun filled camp experience to the public. It is a great way to celebrate our 32nd year of serving the public and making an impact on our community through the arts. “We change lives, stated Teed as she spoke of all the year round programs offered by Mill Street Loft.  Bringing our summer camp experience the Poughkeepsie Galleria is like bringing what we do to the “Main Street” of our community. We want to celebrate with everyone by simulating a Day at Arts Camp”. There will be an array of art demonstrations including the potter’s wheel, mask making, printmaking and paper marbling. Along with our professional demos, everyone will have the opportunity to make a cosmic parade hat which will be used in our “Sharing” at 3pm. (The culminating group sing-along and impromptu performance which invites everyone to be an active part.) The music performance line up for the afternoon is a star studded list of past and present DAC artists who hold national and international honors such as the Guinness Book of Records, Parents Choice Award and the Oppenheimer Award. “We look forward to an awesome afternoon full of art making, music, drumming, dancing and singing with the community”, said Teed. “Moms, Dad, Grandparents and children are in for a great treat! Summer will be here before you know it. Let’s welcome spring together!”
The event is free and guaranteed to be a big hit for families. 1-4pm

Wow!! Only 10 more days until Spring!

According to the Farmer's Almanac...

The Vernal Equinox

Ah, spring! This season brings increasing daylight, warming temperatures, and the rebirth of flora and fauna. The word equinox is derived from the Latin words meaning “equal night.” Days and nights are approximately equal everywhere and the Sun rises and sets due east and west.

Have you ever tried to balance a raw egg on it's end on the first day of spring?

Here's a fun spring project from Martha Stewart

Eggshell Flower Pots!

Young gardeners can use eggshells as pots to start seeds and coffee-stirrer tags to foretell what will pop up where.

Plant seeds according to package instructions, and nestle planters in an egg carton on a sunny windowsill, where they can be watered easily.

The first leaves to sprout will be the cotyledons or seed leaves, which supply nutrients to the young plant until the first true leaves (resembling those of the parent plant) appear. When plants have grown to about 3 inches and have at least two sets of true leaves, they are ready to be transplanted to the garden. (Remove them from the eggshells first.) and be sure there's no danger of frost!

I ordered my heirloom tomato seeds and will be planting them in seed trays to sprout! I love waking up each morning to mist the trays with water! Watching the first leaves pop out of the soil is so exciting! I'll post pics here as they grow!

Try making this snack for St Paddy's Day
It's yummy and easy to make! From Spoonful.com

What you'll need

  • Green pepper
  • English muffin
  • Cheddar cheese

How to make it

  1. To make one, slice a green pepper crosswise near the pointed end to get a small, three-lobed shamrock shape. (If your pepper has four lobes, you've got a lucky clover instead.) Cut a small slice for a stem.
  2. Toast half an English muffin, then top it with a slice of Cheddar and the pepper shamrock. Place the muffin on a tray, then broil it in a toaster oven until the cheese is melted.

February Fun

A Good Time

was had by all who came to the Dutchess Arts Camp Family Fun Event at Vassar College
last Saturday!

Thanks to our Teaching Artists, Nina Tantillo Elton, Ann Teed and Kevin Goveia
and to David Bloom for coordinating with the folks at Vassar
Teresa Quinn, Assistant Dean of the College for Campus Activities
Margaret Vetare, Coordinator of Public Education and Information at the
Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center

One of the galleries we viewed at the Lehman Loeb was the Hudson River School Painters.
DID YOU KNOW there's a Hudson River School Art Trail?

Many sites are right here in our own backyard! The Vanderbilt Overlook is one of the 17 world-class vistas included in Hudson River School Art Trail

AND one of many attractions that caused National Geographic Traveler magazine to call the Hudson Valley one of 20 must-see places during 2013.

Other areas known for this painting movement are in the Connecticut River Valley, The White Mountains of New Hampshire and Yellowstone Park in Wyoming

Valentine's Day is quickly approaching!
I've been searching the web to find great ideas for treats and projects.
Martha Stewart has a large collection of ideas, everything from cards to treats and thoughtful gifts!

I especially like these easy-to-make hearts
that hang in your windows to bring cheerful warm light into your home.

Kaboose is another source for fun projects! There are excellent videos of art and craft ideas for even the youngest artist.

Here's a great way to make hearts by using the side of your hand as a stamp!

Here's another great recipe Heartfelt Pancakes  fun to make with kids from
Spoonful.com

Serve some heart-shaped pancakes to kick off Valentine's Day! Pancake batter makes nearly ideal "ink" on a hot griddle. We used our regular made-from-scratch pancake recipe with a splash of extra milk for fluidity and doubled the recipe so we'd have plenty to practice with.

What you'll need

  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 2 tbsp. sugar (optional)
  • 4 tsp. baking powder
  • 2 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 1/2 cups plus 1 tbsp. milk (or buttermilk)
  • 4 tbsp. butter or margarine

How to make it

  1. Preheat griddle over moderate heat while you mix batter. Sift (with a real sifter, if possible) flour, salt, sugar and baking powder into a bowl. Combine egg, milk, and butter in a separate bowl and slowly stir into dry ingredients. Mix well so lumps won't gum up the process.
  2. When a drop of cold water will dance on the griddle, begin cooking. To make a "pen," funnel the batter into a squeeze bottle with a hole in the cap, such as a clean chocolate syrup container. On the griddle, shape the hearts one lobe at a time. They're really just a V shape, which spreads out into a heart on the griddle. You can also write secret messages or your child's initials. Top with fresh berries and maple syrup. Makes 24 pancakes.

TESTER'S TIP: For a perfectly shaped heart, make regular round pancakes and cut them out with a heart-shaped cookie cutter.

    ENJOY!!

It's January and a Brand New Year!

It's January and a Brand New Year!

Believe it or not. . . while the winter winds are blowing and snow is covering the ground. . .  Keith and I start planning for summer camp! We are contacting artists and thinking up themes for Dutchess Arts Camp 2013.

Just thought we'd pass along some fun ideas for things to do in the meantime.

Check out these yummy cupcakes from  spoonful.com
Create marshmallow snowmen and invite some friends to go sleigh riding!

What you'll need

  • Cooled cupcake (baked from your favorite recipe)
  • White icing
  • Large marshmallows
  • Waxed paper
  • Pretzel sticks
  • Decorators' gel
  • Orange slice candy
  • Junior Mints
  • Thin Mints
  • Fruit leather

How to make it

  1. Frost a cooled cupcake (baked from your favorite recipe) with white icing.
Flatten a large marshmallow on waxed paper with the palm of your hand. Cut a second marshmallow in half horizontally, then stack the halves on the first marshmallow to form a torso and head.
  1. Push a thin pretzel stick down through the snowman (this will help him stand up), then set him on the cupcake.
  2. Use decorators' gel to create a mouth, eyes, and buttons, then add pretzel stick arms and a wedge cut from an orange slice candy for a nose.
  3. Accessorize with a candy hat (a Junior Mint secured to a Thin Mint with icing) and a fruit leather scarf.
